Cet article revient sur plusieurs rencontres marquantes faites par Mathilde,\u00a0 responsable de la communication de <\/span><\/i>Youth Visions<\/span><\/i><\/a>, un projet de film documentaire qui porte la voix de jeunes en premi\u00e8re ligne des crises politiques, \u00e9conomiques et climatiques, dans plusieurs pays. L\u2019\u00e9quipe arrive \u00e0 Delhi en juin 2023 pour un s\u00e9minaire avec une dizaine de jeunes Indiennes. Un s\u00e9minaire qui fait office de casting.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

This article reflects on several impactful encounters experienced by Mathilde, the communications leader of Youth Visions. This documentary film project brings forth the voices of young adults on the front lines of political, economic, and climate crises in several countries. The team arrived in Delhi in June 2023 for a seminar organized with about ten young Indian women. The seminar served as a casting call.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Elles viennent des quatre coins de l\u2019Inde : Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Raipur, ne parlent pas toutes la m\u00eame langue, ont des cultures, des attitudes, des religions, peut-\u00eatre, diff\u00e9rentes. L\u2019Inde, ce pays continent qui en contient une multitude. Devant moi, une dizaine de jeunes filles qui ont comme point commun – le seul ? – de participer \u00e0 un s\u00e9minaire organis\u00e9 pour le tournage d\u2019un film documentaire.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dans leur diversit\u00e9, je suis tout de suite frapp\u00e9e par ce qui les unit : leurs cheveux. Une belle chevelure noire, soyeuse et dense, qui \u00ab contient tout un r\u00eave, plein de voilures et de m\u00e2tures \u00bb (<\/span>Baudelaire<\/span><\/a> – \u201cUn h\u00e9misph\u00e8re dans une chevelure\u201d). Des cheveux qui renvoient imm\u00e9diatement \u00e0 l\u2019imaginaire de l\u2019Indienne, avec un sari de mille couleurs et un point rouge, parfaitement rond, pos\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019exact milieu de son front.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

They came from all over India: Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Raipur. They do not all speak the same language and have different cultures, attitudes, and perhaps religions. India, a <\/span>continent sized<\/span> country with so many distinct aspects. In front of me, a dozen young girls with only one thing in common \u2013 participating in a seminar for the making of a documentary film.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In their diversity, I was immediately struck by what united them: their hair. Beautiful black, silky, and dense hair that \u00ab\u00a0contains a whole dream, full of sails and masts\u00a0\u00bb (Baudelaire – \u201cUn h\u00e9misph\u00e8re dans une chevelure\u201d). Hair that instantly conjures up the image of an Indian woman in a thousand-colored sari with a perfectly round red dot placed precisely in the middle of her forehead.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mais parmi ces m\u00e8ches noires, qui ont le pouvoir extraordinaire de faire r\u00eaver, deux coupes \u201c\u00e0 la gar\u00e7onne\u201d. Un d\u00e9calage. Une rupture. Deux femmes \u201cen marge\u201d, en r\u00e9volte ? Se couper les cheveux n\u2019a jamais \u00e9t\u00e9 anodin. C\u2019est un acte militant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But among these mesmerizing black locks, there were two \u201cboyish\u201d haircuts. A contrast. A rupture. Two women \u201con the fringe,\u201d in revolt? Cutting one’s hair has never been trivial. It is a militant act.<\/span><\/p>\n

Et si se couper les cheveux \u00e9tait un acte performatif, synonyme d\u2019espoir, de lutte, d’optimisme ? Choisir c\u2019est renoncer. Retirer un peu de soi, mais d\u00e9cider d\u2019aller de l\u2019avant. Et j\u2019avais devant moi deux jeunes femmes qui en avaient fait l\u2019exp\u00e9rience. Enfin, j\u2019\u00e9tais sur le point de v\u00e9rifier l\u2019exactitude de la philosophie esth\u00e9tique de Coco Chanel, que je n\u2019ai encore jamais os\u00e9 remettre en question.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Une de ces deux activistes me touche particuli\u00e8rement, Reshmi. Je la rencontre tout d\u2019abord \u00e0 travers son sourire et son regard. L\u2019un \u00e9clairant l\u2019autre. Une maturit\u00e9, une force, un \u00e9panouissement. Elle a 20 ans.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And if cutting hair was a performative act, synonymous with hope, struggle, and optimism? To choose is to give up. Removing a part of oneself but deciding to move forward. And in front of me were two young women who had experienced this. I was finally about to verify the accuracy of Coco Chanel’s aesthetic philosophy, which I had never dared to question.<\/span><\/p>\n

One of these two activists particularly touched me, Reshmi. I was first struck by her smile and gaze. One illuminating the other. A maturity, a strength, a blossoming. She is 20 years old.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cela fait maintenant 6 mois que je voyage, et je suis \u00e0 chaque fois touch\u00e9e, \u00e9mue par les regards des jeunes rencontr\u00e9s. Les yeux sont un po\u00e8me, on en per\u00e7oit parfois la beaut\u00e9 sans savoir pourquoi. Au Liban, lors de notre s\u00e9minaire, j\u2019ai \u00e9t\u00e9 boulevers\u00e9e par Khawla. Lorsqu\u2019elle m\u2019a regard\u00e9e pour la premi\u00e8re fois, j\u2019ai senti le poids d\u2019une histoire trop lourde \u00e0 porter pour une femme d\u2019\u00e0 peine 20 ans. De la profondeur, une nostalgie peut-\u00eatre, mais pas de r\u00e9volte. On dit que certains n\u2019ont pas eu d\u2019enfance. Je ne sais pas si c\u2019est son cas, mais la force de son regard lui donne une maturit\u00e9 que peu de jeunes ont. J\u2019apprends qu\u2019elle est r\u00e9fugi\u00e9e syrienne, qu\u2019elle aime \u00e9crire, surtout des po\u00e8mes. Elle en poste certains sur YouTube, qui lui valent de nombreuses critiques, notamment celles d\u2019un homme qui la menace, elle et sa famille. Parler d\u2019amour et de po\u00e9sie d\u00e9range, parfois. Devant mon regard empathique, elle rit. \u00ab Moi \u00e7a m\u2019amuse, \u00e7a permet au moins de briser la routine ! \u00bb. Soit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Je\u00a0 rencontre donc des jeunes qui me bouleversent, et je sens que Reshmi va en faire partie.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It has now been six months that I have been traveling, and I am always touched, moved by the looks of the young people I meet. The eyes are a poem; sometimes, we perceive their beauty without knowing why. In Lebanon, during our seminar, I was deeply moved by Khawla. When she looked at me for the first time, I felt the weight of a story too heavy for a woman barely 20 years old. Depth, perhaps nostalgia, but not rebellion. They say some people never had a childhood. I don\u2019t know if that\u2019s her case, but the strength of her gaze gives her a maturity that few young people have. I learned that she is a Syrian refugee, loves writing, especially poems. She posts some on YouTube, which earn her many criticisms, including from a man who threatens her and her family. Talking about love and poetry is sometimes unsettling. In response to my empathetic look, she laughed. \u201cIt amuses me; at least it breaks the routine!\u201d Well.<\/span><\/p>\n

I meet young people who move me, and I sense that Reshmi will be one of them.<\/span><\/p>\n

J\u2019avais d\u00e9cid\u00e9, avec Virgile, ing\u00e9nieur du son sur notre projet, que j\u2019allais apprendre \u00e0 r\u00e9aliser des podcasts. J\u2019en avais envie. Rentrer dans l\u2019intimit\u00e9 des jeunes, \u00e9couter leurs histoires, leur poser des questions. Et c’\u00e9tait d\u00e9cid\u00e9, mon premier podcast serait avec Reshmi. Je ne connaissais rien d\u2019elle si ce n\u2019est ses cheveux courts, son regard et son sourire, mais c\u2019\u00e9tait suffisant. Elle m\u2019avait touch\u00e9e, elle allait en toucher d\u2019autres. N\u2019agissant que par intuition, je me pr\u00e9pare tout de m\u00eame, un minimum… Je collecte quelques informations sur son histoire, \u00e9coute les conseils de Virgile et lui demande de rester avec moi pour me guider, il prendra \u00e9galement le son.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I had decided, with Virgile, the sound engineer on our project, that I was going to learn how to create podcasts. I wanted to. To enter the intimacy of the young people, listen to their stories, ask them questions. And it was decided, my first podcast would be with Reshmi. I knew nothing about her except her short hair, her gaze, and her smile, but it was enough. She had touched me; she was going to touch others. Acting only on intuition, I still prepared a minimum… I gathered some information about her story, listened to Virgile\u2019s advice, and asked him to stay with me to guide me; he would also handle the sound.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nous voil\u00e0 quelques heures plus tard, dans une chambre, sans ventilateur pour \u00e9viter tout bruit parasite. Il fait chaud. C\u2019est la premi\u00e8re fois que Reshmi parle dans un micro, c\u2019est la premi\u00e8re fois que je tiens un micro. La chance sourit aux d\u00e9butants. Nous sommesOn est contentes. Nous sommesOn est \u00e0 notre place. Nous nous sourionsOn se sourit. Et \u00e7a commence.<\/span><\/p>\n

A few hours later, we are in a room, without a fan to avoid any noise. It\u2019s hot. It\u2019s the first time Reshmi speaks into a microphone, and it\u2019s the first time I hold one. Luck favors beginners. We are happy. We are in our place. We smile at each other. And it begins.<\/span><\/p>\n

Je me suis toujours demand\u00e9e, qui ? Quand tu aimes qui ? On ne peut pas aimer tout court, si ? Reshmi a aim\u00e9. On a besoin d\u2019amour et d\u2019espoir pour partir. Elle a aim\u00e9 l\u2019inconnu, le r\u00eave, la vie pour laquelle elle allait se battre. Elle a aim\u00e9 toutes les autres femmes qui, comme elle, subissent une injustice li\u00e9e \u00e0 leur genre, celles qui luttent et celles qui acceptent. Elle ne part pas seulement pour elle, mais pour toutes les autres filles de son village. Devenir la preuve vivante qu\u2019une vie meilleure est possible.<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve always wondered, who? When you love who? Can\u2019t you just love, plain and simple? Reshmi loved. We need love and hope to leave. She loved the unknown, the dream, the life she was going to fight for. She loved all the other women who, like her, suffer from gender injustice, those who fight, and those who accept. She doesn\u2019t leave just for herself, but for all the other girls in her village. To become the living proof that a better life is possible.<\/span><\/p>\n

Je suis boulevers\u00e9e par ce qu\u2019elle me raconte. J\u2019essaie de prendre conscience du courage qu\u2019il lui a fallu pour tout quitter du jour au lendemain, \u00e0 seulement 18 ans. Je m\u2019efforce de poser des questions pas trop intimes ou d\u00e9rangeantes en regardant constamment Virgile, attendant son regard approbateur \u00ab c\u2019est ok, c\u2019est ok, vas-y \u00bb.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Elle continue son histoire. Arriv\u00e9e \u00e0 Raipur, c\u2019est compliqu\u00e9. Il faut trouver de l\u2019argent, un logement. Elle trouve un travail dans un magasin d\u2019habits mais son patron ne la respecte pas. Un peu par hasard, elle d\u00e9couvre <\/span>LP4Y <\/span><\/a>(Life Project 4 Youth)*, qu\u2019elle rejoint. Un cap important dans sa vie qui lui apporte, au-del\u00e0 de comp\u00e9tences en tout genre, de la confiance en elle. Elle est alors certaine que le choix qu\u2019elle a fait de quitter ses parents pour construire seule une nouvelle vie, \u00e9tait la bonne d\u00e9cision. Plus de culpabilit\u00e9. Maintenant elle le sait, elle aime et un jour, la vie lui sourira.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I am overwhelmed by what she tells me. I try to grasp the courage it took for her to leave everything overnight, at just 18 years old. I try not to ask too intimate or disturbing questions while constantly looking at Virgile, awaiting his approving look \u201cit\u2019s okay, it\u2019s okay, go ahead.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

She continues her story. Upon arriving in Raipur, it\u2019s complicated. She has to find money, housing. She finds a job in a clothing store, but her boss does not respect her. By chance, she discovers LP4Y* (Life Project 4 Youth), which she joins. A crucial step in her life that brings her, beyond various skills, self-confidence. She is then certain that the choice she made to leave her parents to build a new life on her own was the right decision. No more guilt. Now she knows, she loves, and one day, life will smile on her.<\/span><\/p>\n

Elle a tout racont\u00e9, mais qu\u2019en est-il de ses cheveux ? La raison qui nous fait nous tenir l\u00e0 toutes les deux, sous le regard bienveillant de Virgile, s\u2019est doucement \u00e9clips\u00e9e. Inimaginable pour moi de ne pas lui poser la question \u00ab Reshmi, why did you cut your hair ? \u00bb. \u00abIn India, hair is very important to get married. It\u2019s an important part of beauty. I just thought, if I don\u2019t have hair, how is it possible to get married ? So I cut my hair. \u00bb.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Perdre ses cheveux, perdre sa f\u00e9minit\u00e9. Un moyen simple et concret d\u2019\u00e9chapper au mariage. Aujourd\u2019hui elle aime sa nouvelle coupe, inspire de nombreuses jeunes femmes qui ont, elles aussi, coup\u00e9 leurs cheveux.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Elle est professeure et fait des \u00e9tudes de math\u00e9matiques. Son r\u00eave ? Continuer d\u2019enseigner et partager son histoire. Le chemin n\u2019est pas facile, mais \u00e0 voir le sourire de Reshmi, \u00e7a en vaut la peine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She has told everything, but what about her hair? The reason we are standing here together, under Virgile\u2019s benevolent gaze, has quietly faded. Unimaginable for me not to ask the question, \u201cReshmi, why did you cut your hair?\u201d \u201cIn India, hair is very important to get married. It\u2019s an important part of beauty. I just thought, if I don\u2019t have hair, how is it possible to get married? So I cut my hair.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Losing her hair, losing her femininity. A simple and concrete way to escape marriage. Today she loves her new haircut and inspires many young women who have also cut their hair.<\/span><\/p>\n

She is a teacher and studies mathematics. Her dream? To continue teaching and sharing her story. The path is not easy, but seeing Reshmi’s smile, it\u2019s worth it.<\/span><\/p>\n
